Hello, and welcome to USP1. I am your Teaching Assistant, Andrew Cheyne. For those of you who have not had a TA before, I will be leading weekly discussion sections, grading your assignments, and generally serving as a resource for you with any class-related questions. This will be my third time teaching for this course, so hopefully I know most of the answers to your questions at this point.

I will go over more of this in our first section, but for now here are some of my expectations:
- You will come to class prepared to discuss this week's readings. This means that for Week 2 you will have done all of the readings for Weeks 1 & 2. Being prepared means having read the material--so even if you don't understand something, just bring in your question and then we can have a conversation about that point. Remember, other people ALWAYS have the same question as you do even if they're just as nervous to ask it as you are.
- You will respect your colleague's opinions. Remember, section is a lot more interesting when we have disagreement and debates. But in order to have that, we must have an environment of respect.
- 10% will be attendance, which means every class is one percent of your total grade
- 10% will be participation, which will be a combination of assignments done outside of section, and in-class participation through group and individual work. These assignments will be specified later, but will include bringing in review materials for the midterm and final, and a proposal for your research paper. These assignments will help you succeed in the course and are never busy work.
